The Wheel of the Year: A Seasonal Journey
What is The Wheel of the Year?
The Wheel of the Year is an annual cycle of seasonal festivals observed by many pagans and Wiccans. It marks the changing seasons and the natural rhythms of the Earth, celebrating different aspects of nature’s cycle – from growth and abundance to introspection and renewal. It helps practitioners connect with the natural world and acknowledge the sacredness of time.
The Eight Sabbats
The Wheel of the Year is composed of eight main festivals, known as Sabbats. These Sabbats are divided into two categories:
- Solar Festivals (Quarter Days): These four Sabbats are determined by the solstices and equinoxes, marking significant points in the sun’s journey.
- Fire Festivals (Cross-Quarter Days): These four Sabbats fall roughly halfway between the solar festivals and are traditionally associated with ancient Celtic agricultural and pastoral cycles.
Together, these eight points create a continuous cycle, each celebrating a different phase of the Earth’s annual journey around the sun.
