Wheel of the Year

A Guide to Living in Harmony with the Earth’s Cycles

The Wheel of the Year consists of eight festivals, or Sabbats, that mark the four solar points (solstices and equinoxes) and the four midpoints between them. By observing these cycles, we align our internal growth with the external world.

🌑 1. Samhain (SOW-in)

Date: Oct 31 – Nov 1
Theme: The Witches’ New Year; honoring ancestors; the thinning of the “veil.”

  • Spiritual Focus: Releasing the old, shadow work, and acknowledging the cycle of death.
  • Symbols: Pumpkins, skulls, obsidian, rosemary, marigolds.
  • Practice: Set a place at your dinner table for an ancestor or write down a habit you wish to “lay to rest” and safely burn the paper.

❄️ 2. Yule (Winter Solstice)

Date: Dec 20 – Dec 23
Theme: The rebirth of the Sun; the longest night; hope in the darkness.

  • Spiritual Focus: Finding inner light, stillness, and patience for the coming growth.
  • Symbols: Pine, holly, clear quartz, red/gold candles, bells.
  • Practice: Wake up to watch the sunrise, symbolizing the return of the sun’s strength.

🌱 3. Imbolc (IM-bulk)

Date: Feb 1 – Feb 2
Theme: First stirrings of life; purification; the goddess Brigid.

  • Spiritual Focus: “Spring cleaning” of the home and soul; planting the seeds of intention.
  • Symbols: Snowdrops, white candles, milk, amethyst, seeds.
  • Practice: Light every lamp in your house for a few minutes at sunset to welcome back the light.

🥚 4. Ostara (Spring Equinox)

Date: Mar 20 – Mar 23
Theme: Balance; rebirth; the awakening of the Earth.

  • Spiritual Focus: Bringing ideas into action; finding equilibrium between light and dark.
  • Symbols: Eggs, rabbits, jasper, spring flowers (tulips/daffodils), green.
  • Practice: Plant physical seeds in a pot, charging them with a specific goal you want to see grow.

🔥 5. Beltane (BRIGHT FIRE)

Date: May 1
Theme: Fertility; passion; the union of Earth and Sky.

  • Spiritual Focus: Celebrating joy, creativity, and the full blooming of your potential.
  • Symbols: Maypoles, flower crowns, rose quartz, hawthorn, ribbons.
  • Practice: Weave a “wish ribbon” into a tree or your hair to represent a creative project you are nurturing.

☀️ 6. Litha (Summer Solstice)

Date: June 20 – June 22
Theme: Peak power; abundance; the longest day of the year.

  • Spiritual Focus: Celebrating your achievements; feeling the warmth and vitality of the Divine.
  • Symbols: Sunflowers, honey, citrine, oak trees, yellow/gold.
  • Practice: Spend time outdoors at noon. Meditate on the “sun” within your solar plexus, fueling your confidence.

🌾 7. Lammas / Lughnasadh (LOO-nah-sah)

Date: Aug 1
Theme: The first harvest; gratitude; sacrifice.

  • Spiritual Focus: Reaping what you have sown; giving thanks for the first “fruits” of your labor.
  • Symbols: Bread, wheat, carnelian, corn dollies, sunflowers.
  • Practice: Bake a loaf of bread or a cake and share it with loved ones, consciously offering thanks for your blessings.

🍎 8. Mabon (Autumn Equinox)

Date: Sept 20 – Sept 23
Theme: Second harvest; balance; reflection.

  • Spiritual Focus: Taking stock of the year; letting go of what is no longer needed; preparation for rest.
  • Symbols: Apples, grapes, amber, fallen leaves, brown/maroon.
  • Practice: Create a “gratitude jar.” Write down one thing you are thankful for from each of the previous seven Sabbats.

📝 Reflections for the Journey

  • What season is my soul currently in? (Rest, Planting, Growth, or Harvest?)
  • How can I mirror the Earth’s energy today? (Should I be active like the summer sun or quiet like the winter roots?)

“The Wheel turns, and we turn with it. Nothing is ever lost; it only changes form.”
