💡 The 2026 Theme: “Our Power, Our Planet”
This year’s theme is a global rallying cry to reclaim our voice and our future. It highlights that while environmental policies are vital, the real power to protect the Earth belongs to ordinary people.Whether through community action, voting, or changing daily habits, we have the power to drive a sustainable future.
📊 Did You Know? (Fast Facts)
- The Origin: The first Earth Day was held in 1970. It was started by 20 million Americans (10% of the population at the time) protesting for better environmental protections.
- A Global Movement: Today, over 1 billion people in 193 countries participate in Earth Day activities.
- Plastic Problem: Roughly 80% of all plastic ever created still exists in the environment today.
- Tree Power: There are approximately 422 trees for every person on Earth, but we lose millions each year to deforestation.
- Vampire Energy: Electronics plugged in on “standby” mode account for 5–10% of a household’s energy use. Unplug them to save power!
✅ Your “Power” Checklist: 5 Things You Can Do Today
- Switch One Meal: Try a plant-based meal today. Animal agriculture is a leading contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and water use.[5]
- Conduct a “Waste Audit”: Look at your trash. Can you replace one single-use item (like paper towels or plastic water bottles) with a reusable version?
- Adjust the Dial: Lowering your thermostat by just 2 degrees in winter or raising it by 2 degrees in summer can save up to 2,000 lbs of CO2 per year.
- Support Pollinators: Plan to plant a “pollinator pocket” in your yard or a window box using native wildflowers to help local bees and butterflies.
- Be a “Civic Steward”: Earth Day is about policy, too. Sign a petition, join a local “Green Team,” or attend a town hall meeting about local environmental laws.
Go outside and see if you can find:
- A leaf with a unique shape
- A rock that feels smooth
- A sign of an animal (feather, nest, or track)
- A flower that is currently in bloom
- A piece of litter to pick up and dispose of properly (ask an adult for help!)
DIY Project: Seed Bombs
- Mix 3 parts clay, 2 parts potting soil, and 1 part native wildflower seeds. Add a little water, roll into small balls, and let them dry. Once dry, toss them into a bare patch of earth (with permission) and watch the flowers grow!
